An Edwardian apartment in the Russian Hill district of San Francisco was given new life through a series of alterations that brought the kitchen and bedroom more in line with the contemporary sensibilities of the owner. In the kitchen, the original high ceiling was lowered and fitted with a light well to create a more intimate scale and enhance natural illumination. Storage and countertop areas were increased, and clear fir cabinetry added to provide warmth and contrast to the traditional painted walls of the surrounding rooms. A small study alcove adjacent the kitchen provides additional workspace and computer access.
